Pupil Voice

At St Martin’s, we believe in encouraging our pupils to be confident in sharing their views and engaging them in roles of responsibility to help our school become even better.

How do we do this?

Head Boy and Head Girl

Firstly, each year, a boy and girl from Year 6 are selected to become Head Boy and Head Girl. Their role is to represent the pupils in various ways and to support the Headteacher in pupil matters. The children chosen are excellent role models for the other children .They are expected to establish and maintain the highest standards of behaviour for learning and attitude at all times, providing a positive role model for other students across the school.

School Council

Each year a boy and girl representative from each class is nominated by their class to sit on the The School Council. The Council meets fortnightly to discuss any school issues or plan any forthcoming events. Every fortnight, each class holds a meeting where they discuss any class issues arising which could feed in to the next Council meeting.

What do the Council Members do?

• Listening to the views and concerns of other pupils;
• Representing these concerns to the Headteacher, teachers and other adults;
• Coming up with ideas to help improve the school and make decisions;
• Thinking of ways to contribute locally and globally;
• Fundraise for St Martin’s and charities;

Being a Council member is a very responsible position as you have to have a lot of sensible ideas and sometimes have to do things in your lunch times. Members play a very important part in our St Martin’s family!

Talking Partners

We use the strategy of ‘Talking Partners’ in our everyday learning to promote pupil voice.

Transformers

A group of Y6 pupils are selected to perform tasks to transform the school at lunchtime for instance they organise physical activities for the younger children at lunchtimes. In addition to co-ordinating playtime games, they also help to solve any conflicts. They also help in the dining hall and act as eco warriors in school.

House Captains

Candidates in each house write a manifesto and give speeches to their house. The children in each house then democratically vote for the candidate that they feel would be the best representative for their house – to be their ‘voice.

Learning Detectives (Toolkit available to download below) 

We have children in school whose job it is to look at learning. They are trained by the head teacher. As part of their training they watch DVDs of good learning and then explain how it could be outstanding.

Learning Conferencing

Children are constantly asked about their views on learning.

 

 

Mentor Scheme

All our Y6’s have a mentor which is a member of staff. They meet with their mentor every week to talk about their learning .See attached mentor notes pro forma. They also meet with their mentor to plan their career path. The children then have something to aim towards.
