Staying Safe Online

Safer Internet Day 2016 took place on the 9th February with the theme:

 Play your part for a better internet!

The pupils and staff at St. Martin's Primary took part in this special day to raise our awareness of how to stay safe whilst using the internet. We used the Safer Internet Centre resources alongside specific Internet Safety resources provided by Espresso.

Miss Miller attended an ‘Emotional Wellbeing in the Digital World’ conference provided by HeadStart Kernow at The Eden Project. As a Multi Academy Trust we work very closely with Head Start Kernow. One of our joint priorities is to ensure the emotional wellbeing of all our students, we work together in using the ‘Thrive Approach’.

The conference detailed how we as educators can help to encourage the development of healthy ‘Digital Citizens’. Understanding how to help children and young people develop 'Digital Wellbeing'. Digital Health and Wellness focuses on using technology safely and appropriately.

In the technological world we live in today our society is becoming dependent on the use of the internet. It is becoming increasingly necessary to inform our students about the dangers involved with frequent internet use. Internet Safety is integral to our Computing policy and has an equally important role within our curriculum. The new National Curriculum requirements for ‘Computing’ includes ensuring our pupils are taught how to:

  • understand computer networks, including the internet; how they can provide multiple services, such as the World Wide Web, and the opportunities they offer for communication and collaboration
  • use search technologies effectively, appreciate how results are selected and ranked, and be discerning in evaluating digital content
  • select, use and combine a variety of software (including internet services) on a range of digital devices to design and create a range of programs, systems and content that accomplish given goals, including collecting, analysing, evaluating and presenting data and information
  • use technology safely, respectfully and responsibly; recognise acceptable/unacceptable behaviour; identify a range of ways to report concerns about content and contact.

Please note we ensure our pupils are aware of the issues raised through the use of internet enabled devices throughout our creative curriculum, not just on one day!

The minimum age to open an account on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, Tumblr, Kik, and Snapchat is 13. For Vine, Tinder and Yik Yak it's 17. YouTube requires account holders to be 18.
